Why this org in particular? 1) Right now, AI advocacy is clearly the most important thing to do. 2) I've been to some of their protest and one more event, so I know they are doing good work.
I think that donating "close to home" in the sense of point 2, is underrated in EA.
While I do think institutions may be able to set policies that slow down the roll out of data centers, data acquisition (to an extent), and model development, there is a sense of realpolitik risk at play that could a given region or country a disadvantage. If we're already seeing tangible benefits in some fields, what's to say that would not have long term macro economic implications?
This is why Pause AI (and every other serious AI Safety advocacy group I know about) is advocating for global pause/stop/slowdown.
To be clear, I don't think that "if I don't do it, someone else will" is an acceptable excuse for raising to RSI (shame on all the frontier labs). But everyone pausing together is both an easier sell and a bigger win, and therefore the obviously right thing to advocate for.
